About this portrait – I encountered these Sperm Whales resting on the surface in the deep waters of the Azores islands, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.  Among the largest whales in the sea, this species is known for hunting giant squid in water thousands of feet deep.

About this portrait – We spent the day observing this mother, calf and escort as they floated together in the mild currents off Tonga.  The calf stayed close to its mother leaving the escort to keep an eye out for eager males looking to mate.

About this portrait – This mother was teaching its calf how to breathe, as they floated over one of the many submerged reefs in Tonga. The calf stayed under its mothers belly for about 5-7 minutes than slowly swam up to the surface for a few breaths, then resumed its position under its mother.
