artist statement

My goal is to create compelling images of nature that reflect beauty and drama in order to evoke an emotional response.Maui Underwater Photographer

I feel very fortunate to live my dream of being a professional photographer and want to give something back.  Thats how Art for Conservation was created. This programs uses the sale of fine art to support worthwhile NPO's  like Whale Trust and Whale Dolphin Conservation Society, fund programs which study and preserve cetaceans, increase scientists knowledge base, help train future educators, and increase public awareness.

Recently the idea occurred to me to use art to support other important and worthy causes that need funds ranging from invasive species of plants, reptiles, and insects in Hawaii, water issues, global warming, education, health, malaria, etc,.  The project is called art for a good cause. While still in the developmental stage, this program will provide meaningful art to the public and funds for worthwhile programs.

about Douglas

In 1985, Douglas Hoffman moved to Maui, Hawaii to work in the hotel industry. After an introductory diving trip opened his eyes to the world below the sea, he decided to change careers and become a dive master and scuba instructor. To maintain his passion for the sport, he made himself a promise that for every four dives he worked, he would do one dive with a camera.

As years went by he logged thousands of dives and true to his word took his camera and learned the art of underwater photography. Douglas' images received awards in international competition and were published in airline, photography, and scuba diving magazines. To earn extra money for equipment and travel, Doug worked as a wedding photographer in Maui.

In 1995, he met his wife Mieko, a fellow dive instructor from Japan. The couple spent the next few years dividing their time between Maui, and traveling throughout the South Pacific. In 1997, the Hoffman's decided to settle down and opened Maui Photography Inc., specializing in family portraiture and weddings. Building the business required a lot of effort, but Douglas' passion enabled him to find time to dive locally as well as lead one or two trips a year to exotic destinations.

In 2005, Douglas went blue water snorkeling off the coast of the Big Island and swam with dolphins, pilot whales and an oceanic white tip shark. Since that encounter he has organized 6 groups to travel to Tonga to swim with whales, and photographed Sperm Whales in the Azores. Douglas' new project is Art for Conservation. Its goal is to raise money, for the Whale Dolphin Conservation Society, Whale Trust and other non-profit organizations that are protecting whales, conducting valid research and training the next generation of educators.

Douglas has found a way to live out his dreams. He supports his family and helps others by creating family and fine art portraits, and finds time to travel each year to Tonga to swim with Southern Hemisphere Humpback Whales.
