In Maui there is an unlimited number of beautiful settings starting at sea level and going up to the forests and pasturelands of Haleakala. When creating portraits of people in these locations photographers face a variety of lighting situations. This workshop will expose participants to lighting tools such as off camera flashes, reflectors and diffusors. With these tools I will teach you how to enhance or modify existing light to create images that capture emotion and have impact. We will also discuss posing, styles of portraiture, how to create environmental portraits of people so that the people have an appropriate head size in the overall image, and composition.
I offer half day workshops. The cost is $500 per person. Family rates are available as are small group incentives. Includes the use of radio controlled camera flash units, professional quality diffusors and reflectors.

Maui is perfect for landscape and nature photography. There are beautiful beaches, waterfalls, bamboo forests, streams, valleys, pasturelands and agricultural lands. The light is best after dawn and before sunset. Maui has many microclimates so there are always places to go. Prior to the workshop I will send participants a PDF describing the most important rules of composition. It includes sample photographs to illustrating concepts such as framing, lines of repetition, leading lines, repetition of design, rule of thirds and more.
This is our most popular tour and it right takes 7 hours. We need that much time to travel to some incredible locations along along the road to Hana. Some of the areas we will go to include an epic Maui beach for the actual sunrise, bamboo forest, waterfall, rocky coast, Keanea and more. If in the unlikely event weather is a factor we will change the plan accordingly. Maui is has dozens of micro climates and we can always find a place to make photographs. While in the car we will talk about photography topics ranging from how your camera works, settings, composition, and so much more. Neutral density filters are strongly recommended for this tour.
This tour is 7 hours. We will head out of Lahaina, Napili and Kapalua and work the coast line which features tranquil bays, beaches, rugged cliffs, sugar cane fields, dirt roads, rocky coast, miles of scenic topography. We will about travel more than halfway around the west side heading towards Kahakaloa then decide if we should continue around to Wailuku or head back the way we came. Weather, time, and road conditions will be the determining factor. The road is not well maintained and considered a bit sketchy by many. If you have been to Maui before and never explored this side of the island this tour might be perfect for you. While in the car we will talk about photography topics ranging from how your camera works, settings, composition, and so much more. Neutral density filters are strongly recommended for this tour.
This tour starts early. This tour is 7 hours. We meet 2.5 hours before sunrise so we have time to drive up the Volcano before the sun breaks the horizon. It is a long drive to be sure and weather can be a factor. Even if the weather is great it gets really cold up there so dress accordingly. Once the sunrises we will create images at the summit, then head to Hosmers Grove for a walk through the forest. After that we will head down, stopping when we see rainbows and beautiful views. At this point we might head towards Poli Poli another area featuring majestic views, Ulapalakua where the winery is an look for horses, old fences, curving roads, or explore the back roads and agriculture lands. While in the car we will talk about photography topics ranging from how your camera works, settings, composition, and so much more.We can do this as a sunset tour as well. We just start later in the day. Call for details. Neutral density filters are strongly recommended for this tour.
This is a five hour tour/workshop. The beaches in Makena and Wailea can be a sunrise tour, but are the best areas to photograph sunset. These areas feature sandy beaches, rocky coast line, lava, and have great ocean views. This tour starts in the Iao valley and we will photograph a beautiful stream and use neutral density filters to create artistic effects and manage light. Once done in the valley we will head to south or west Maui to photograph beautiful beaches, dramatic coast line, and end after the sunset. This is a 7 hour tour. Participants should bring neutral density filters for this tour.
